In January, 2003 iRoam Services
Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of SeaChange
Corporation, a Canadian high-tech company based in Toronto,
Ontario Canada. [ press release
] In fact, the two businesses had been interrelated
for a number of years.
In 1996, Sea Change was a founding partner
of iPass Inc., a new venture setting out to create a global
network for internet access using a common, distributed authentication
protocol, which it had developed. iPass raised venture
capital from a number of leading venture capital firms including
Accel Partners, CrossPoint Ventures & Asia Pacific Ventures.
iPass's authentication protocol was adopted by the Internet Engineering
Task Force as a standard, and leading manufacturers of remote
access servers (including Cisco, Lucent, Ascend and Northern Telecom)
incorporated the technology into their products.
In October 1997 Sea Change Corporation
was appointed Master Solution Partner for iPass Global Internet
Roaming Services, and began reselling the iPass network in Canada

In the late 90's, iPass built the largest network for global internet
access using top tier Internet service providers in each country.
iPass became an award winning solution for business travellers
who required cost effective and reliable Internet access around
the globe.
In Nov 2000, Sea Change sold its
security & roaming services division to Qnetix Inc. Qnetix's
roaming business grew rapidly, resulting in the creation of iRoam
Services Inc, in May, 2002 [ press
release ] as a dedicated subsidiary of Qnetix focusing
on global Internet access. Sea Change acquired iRoam from Qnetix
in January of 2003 [ press release
] .
More recently, iPass has emerged as a market leader in providing
both local & international internet access for corporations,
as a result of their ability to combine competitive pricing with
additional benefits such as tight integration with corporate authentication
systems, simple access control software clients, and enforcement
of security policies. |
