Frequently Asked Question:

Can I use ghost with SafeBoot?

"Ghosting" or imaging Hard Disks protected or encrypted with SafeBoot is possibe but has restrictions...

Ghost is a disk image software. Using Ghost with SafeBoot you should pay attention. Ghost can be used to make an individual copy of an encrypted hard drive for backup reasons. Doing this you should be aware of the following:

1. Use Ghost in 'raw' mode. Hereby Ghost will copy all data including boot sector and will do no compresion.

2. The resulting image is as big as the drive. You cannot compress encrypted data.

Ghost should not be used for encrypted disk multiplication in roll outs etc. If it did work, then all the machines made from the image would have the same encryption key - this is not a good idea.

If you want to use Ghost for disk multiplication with SafeBoot can be done. For this please contact your SafeBoot representative.

Can I use SafeBoot on a machine with a RAID controller, or with dynamic disks?

SafeBoot does not inherently support RAID, but has been used successfully on pure hardware based controllers. SafeBoot does not support software raid, or dynamic disks though. Control Break does not test SafeBoot on RAID hardware, and has no diagnostic or recovery tools to repair problems in this environment. With this in mind, we would advise therefore not to use SafeBoot.

Is it possible to use defragmentation tools with SafeBoot?

Yes, it is possible to use defragmentation tools with SafeBoot as long as the defragmention program does not move files marked as "unmovable".

Normal Microsoft defragmentation tools work fine with SafeBoot because they don't move these marked files by default. Third party defragmentation tools such as Norton Speeddisk however may move these marked files although they shouldn't. In those cases you can put an "exclusion" entry for the file "c:\safeboot.fs" in these tools to make it safe for SafeBoot.

Does SafeBoot support the Linux OS?

At present SafeBoot does not support Linux. It is however possible to use hard disk encryption software with Linux but at present we are waiting for a business case. If you have a business case then please contact us.

Is my data lost when I forget my password or lose my token?

No, all SafeBoot products have extensive recovery options in-place. These options ensure that even when you lose your password or token you will be able to get to your data.
